Children and Youth Awards

Several of these awards, as noted, are given to one post in each of these membership categories:

  • Posts with 15 to 150 members
  • Posts with 151 to 300 members
  • Posts with 301 to 500 members
  • Posts with 501 to 750 members
  • Posts with 751 to 1000 members
  • Posts with 1001 and over members 

 

The following trophies will be judged by the Department Children and Youth Committee.

PAUL CHONKICH MEMORIAL TROPHY

Awarded to Posts showing the most outstanding achievement in Child Welfare Programs.  Awarded to Posts in each of the membership categories.

 

ARTHUR L. McGEE MEMORIAL TROPHY

Awarded to Post in each District excelling in Child Welfare work.  In order to compete for this trophy a Post must have filed their National Consolidated Report on the proper form by the specified date.  Posts may attach additional evidence, claims, photos, exhibits, etc. to their report form.  Awards will be made in the following categories:

The award is done in memory of Arthur L. McGee, who was appointed Department Adjutant by Department Commander Wallace Williams on December 8, 1927, upon the resignation of Ralph E. Barnes.  Prior to his appointment Arthur McGee had been active in the Department Child Welfare field.  On December          21, 1933, Commander Caesar L. Aiello appointed him as a member of the original committee to establish the Sons of the American Legion in Maryland.  Arthur L. McGee served through the close of Commander Aiello’s term when he was succeeded by Walter W. Beigel as Department Adjutant

 

DR. ALFRED BROTMAN MEMORIAL TROPHY

Awarded to the District excelling in Child Welfare Programs as reported by its Posts.  The award will be presented to the Post in the District with the best report. 

 

JOHN F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL TROPHY

Awarded to the Governor of Maryland Boys State

In memory of the 35th President of the United States, a decorated veteran of World War II and Legion member of the Department of Massachusetts.  During his terms as President John Kennedy addressed the National Conventions and welcomed the Senators of Boys Nation to the White House Rose Garden each year.


REVEREND VALENTINE WEISSERT MEMORIAL TROPHY

Awarded to the Post sponsoring the Governor of Maryland Boys State.

Rev. Valentine Weissert was elected Department Chaplain in 1956 the same year as Leroy Metz was elected as Commander.  He holds the distinction of being the only Department Chaplain to have been also an elected Junior Vice-Commander.  At his 1961 funeral over 100 children attended from his church as well as a large contingent from The American Legion.
